Today I attended an event that inspired me. I am very grateful to my new boss in sending me. Great timing for me as I really needed a bit of a brain massage. I was privileged to have such great masters to inspire me.
The day started off with some laughs and challenges from Connie Podesta. I so enjoyed laughing! She challenged me to be proud of the choices I am making, and the importance of striving for what you want in life.
Jim Collins advised that there is no reason to ever be imprisoned by our failures. Ask yourself, what are you in it for. Be humble realize that anyone can fall. Have core values that you preserve and don't forget to be flexible. Discipline yourself as give yourself quiet time to think.
Tony Dungy retired coach of the Indianapolis Colts reminded us not to forget our family. To think about how we impact the people in our lives. Do what you do well, and let others do what they do well. God put you were you are for a reason - have perseverance!
Mark Sanborn asked us to become story shapers. Help others when they are down to refocus to future hopes and redefine failure. Failure is something that happens to you not who you are. We get put into life lessons that we never planned on taking. Remember to be there for others, Open doors and help shape their stories. My story is how others have effected my life.
Jim Goodnight the CEO of SAS Institute had a dry sense of humor that often had everyone laughing. He told of the importance of treating people with respect and dignity, giving your staff extras. 35 hour weeks, flexible day offs, freebies at work(coffee/snacks,etc) Show your employees you got their back. He believes in immersed and interactive schooling and belives our schools are not doing enough of this. His passion is for our youth to learn and be knowledgeable.
Ed Bastian the president of Delta Air Lines shared how reconnecting with the staff at Delta was the #1 important thing they did to keep Delta from dieing. The admitted their faults and opened their hearts to the employees. He said how important it was to practise agility and never take the victim mentality. He informed us Delta encourages to give back to our world and people, this helps to keep their focus and priorities where they want them. It also fosters bonding among employees. Focus on where you are and make the best of the situation you are in at the present time.
John Maxwell discussed the key of connecting with people and focusing on finding common ground to connect. Work hard and intentionally to connect; putting effort and energy into connecting with others. Take time to learn about individuals and what interests them.
Steve Uzzell showed some of his award winning photography and shared how life tied in with this photos. How he made these incredible pictures happen. His advice was to know where you are going, do the research you need to get there and make it happen. Mastery is important.
Ben Carson a neurosurgeon and professor of pediatric neurosurgery shared the story of how he became who he is today. No knowledge is ever wasted, you never know when it might serve you. You cannot over load your brain. Be valuable to the people around you.
The top three things I took away from this day:
1. Laughter and humor open people up
2. We get put into life lessons we never planned, use them
2. You control your behavior
To me greatness is defined by what you give back. Being selfless.
